Book Review | Today is the Birthday of the World
by Linda Heller

Score: 3.5

This is a beautiful, excellent story told in simple language for the very young. Each creature on earth has a gift for which we are accountable to God. All God asks of us is that we be the best we can be. If we can tell God at the end of the year that we have been the best we could have been that year, then we have taken care of the earth and given the earth the best birthday present of all.

My only concern with this book is that the illustrations, while extraordinarily beautiful, are quite sophisticated for the story. They have a crackled overlay on them that I am not sure a young child can appreciate. In addition, the picture of the earth with a face blowing out a birthday cake is a bit on the complicated side for this age group. All that aside, however, this is a beautiful book with a beautiful message for the Jewish New Year.

I recommend this book for Jewish libraries.
