I’m Back…

I have been cleaning out my files and found a letter I wrote to everyone I had been working with in the Jewish community back on 05-30-01. I was explaining my reasons for closing forwordsbooks, the book fair and catalog business I had built from scratch and run for more than 11 years. Looking back, the answer was complex, involving a move across country, an exciting job offer and much more.

Here it is 09-09-09, 8 years later, and I am writing a blog to explain why I am re-launching forwordsbooks. The answer is a bit simpler this time. I miss the books.

Oh, don’t get me wrong, there are a lot of complexities in trying to figure out how to restart a business, especially an online business, but when push came to shove, the bottom line was – I miss the books.

All of Me!And I miss telling all of you about the books. You know, those fantastic, beautiful, extraordinary books that I used to share with you at CAJE conferences or NATE conferences or PAAR or whichever event it was where we would meet. The turning point for me was going to BookExpoAmerica (the publishing world’s trade show) and seeing All of Me! a book of thanks by Molly Bang. As I was standing in the Scholastic booth, reading the publisher’s copy of this book, all that was going through my mind was, “This-is-the-most-amazing-book-I-have-seen-in-a-very-long-time.-I-have-got-to-share-it-with-every-preschool-director-and-temple-educator-I-know-This-is-perfect-to-introduce-little-kids-to-the-Asher-Yatzar-prayer.-They-could-learn-the-Debbie-Friedman-song-after-reading-this-Oh-my-God,-how-am-I-going-to-get-the-word-out-about-this-book…”

The next thing I knew, I was looking for a website designer and trying to figure out what it would take to restart forwordsbooks. And, Here I am, online, with a website.

The Very Good Question I have been asked most often by those I have shared this idea with is: But how are you going to make money doing this? Here is the –hopefully- Very Good Answer:

  1. My forwords Catalog of Jewish Books, with the organization and annotation that you all have told me you loved and missed is available at your beck and call. For a modest fee.
  2. My site is linked with Amazon.com where you can buy any of the books I discuss in my blogs or that are listed in my catalog. I get a VERY few cents from each sale that comes from my website.
  3. I am available for Educator, Librarian and Parent Workshops, which you can find under the Training Tab.
  4. I will NOT be providing book fairs, but I will happily provide a) Links to some great companies who do book fairs and b) A list of books I think should be at your book fair. Those two things are Free!

I am looking forward to telling you about what has been going on in my life these past 8 years, sharing with you my excitement regarding the exceptional children’s books I have been reading and hearing about what you have been doing as well. We have a lot of catching up to do. In the meantime…

Happy Reading!
