Book Review | Gertrude is Gertrude is Gertrude is Gertrude
by Jonah Winter

Score: 3

Gertrude Stein was Jewish. Alice B. Toklas was also Jewish. This is a book about Gertrude Stein and Alice B. Toklas.  I cannot say it is a Jewish book. It has no real Jewish content.  I would not even classify it as a Biography, although that is where it will most likely be shelved.  This book introduces the reader to the unique and daring style of Gertrude Stein’s writing.

It also provides a glimpse into the world of Gertrude and Alice and their friends – the artists and literary figures of their day – who attended the parties at their home.  In fact a careful reading of this fascinating book, will teach many interesting facts about Gertrude and Alice. All of this engaging writing is accompanied by attractive, bold and distinctive illustrations.

This picture book is better for older readers. Students interested in writing a biographical report about Gertrude Stein would best use it. Additionally, someone interested in her writing may find it interesting reading.

I recommend this book to Jewish libraries.
